Terms of Service
These Terms of Service govern your access to and use of ScanTheThings websites, in-browser auditing tools, standalone CLI runners, and CI/CD automation engines.
- You own all your audit findings, ignore lists, configuration files, and reports.
- You agree to only scan websites that you own, operate, or have permission to audit.
- Automated accessibility tests are helpful engineering tools, but cannot provide 100% legal immunity from ADA/WCAG claims.
- Our liability to you is limited to the greater of $50 or the total fees you paid us in the prior 12 months.
- You can cancel your Pro subscription at any time with one click in your billing portal.
Acceptance of Terms
By visiting our website, creating an account via passwordless Magic Link, using our in-browser auditing tools, installing our CLI, or integrating ScanTheThings into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service (“Terms”) and our Security & Privacy Architecture. If you are entering into these Terms on behalf of an organization or company, you represent that you have the legal authority to bind that entity.
Authorized Auditing & Acceptable Use
ScanTheThings provides tools to test websites for web accessibility (WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA), broken hyperlinks, Content Security Policies (CSP), and search engine indexing directives.
You expressly agree that you will only audit URLs, domains, and web applications that:
- You own, operate, or manage directly; or
- You have explicit written authorization from the owner/operator to audit.
You may not use ScanTheThings to initiate denial-of-service (DDoS) traffic, conduct unauthorized vulnerability exploitation, bypass automated rate limiting mechanisms, or execute abusive network requests against third-party web services. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that initiate abusive scan traffic.
Data Ownership & Zero-Exfiltration Architecture
We claim zero ownership rights over the code, DOM structures, design assets, or content of the websites you audit:
- Customer Data: You retain 100% exclusive ownership of your target URL suites, custom ignore rules, audit findings, and exported reports.
- Client-Side Isolation: In-browser audits and CLI executions run directly within your local desktop environment or private CI runners. Proprietary internal staging code behind corporate VPNs, private credentials, and employee session cookies are never transmitted to or stored on multi-tenant cloud database clusters.
- Data Retention: Detailed audit findings are automatically purged according to our 30-day retention schedule (or 365-day retention on Pro plans), minimizing third-party data footprint.
Subscriptions, Billing & Cancellations
ScanTheThings offers free tiers alongside paid subscription options, including the Pro Team Pass ($50.00 USD / year).
- Billing Cycle: Paid subscriptions are billed in advance on an annual recurring basis. Payment processing is powered securely by Stripe. We do not store full payment card details on our servers.
- Cancellation: You may cancel your subscription at any time with one click through the self-service Stripe Customer Portal accessible from your Profile page. Upon cancellation, your Pro features remain active until the end of your prepaid billing period, with no subsequent renewal charges.
- Refunds: If you are dissatisfied with your Pro subscription, contact us within 14 days of your initial purchase for a full refund.
Automated Audit Disclaimer & No Legal Advice
Important Legal Notice Regarding WCAG & ADA Compliance:
ScanTheThings utilizes industry-standard automated testing engines (including Axe-core) to detect programmatic accessibility, performance, and structural defects. While automated testing catches 30% to 57% of WCAG issues, no automated tool can guarantee full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 508, the European Accessibility Act (EAA), or WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA. ScanTheThings does not provide legal advice, legal defense, or legal certifications. Complete accessibility compliance requires human expert manual evaluation and assistive technology testing.
